Pressing the power button and getting nothing — no Apple logo, no fan, no chime — is one of the scariest MacBook problems. Before you assume the worst, work through these 7 causes in order. Half of them you can fix yourself.
Quick Triage Checklist
Try these in order, takes 15 minutes total:
- ☐ Plug in charger, wait 30 minutes
- ☐ Try a different charger (or USB-C cable)
- ☐ Try different power outlet
- ☐ Press Power button for full 10 seconds
- ☐ Reset SMC (procedure below)
- ☐ Try a different power button position (Touch ID can be tricky)
- ☐ Listen carefully — any hum, clicking, or fan noise?
If still nothing, continue reading for detailed diagnosis.
Cause #1: Battery Completely Drained (Easy Fix)
Symptoms
- MacBook hasn’t been used in weeks/months
- Battery percentage was low when last used
What’s Happening
Lithium batteries self-discharge over time. After several months of disuse, battery can drop below the threshold needed to even show the “low battery” indicator. From your perspective: nothing happens when you press power.
Fix
- Plug in charger to a known-working outlet
- Wait 15-30 minutes WITHOUT pressing power
- Try power button again
If MacBook now turns on, you’re fine. The battery may need a few full charge/discharge cycles to recalibrate.
When to See a Repair Shop
If you’ve left it charging 1+ hours and still nothing — battery may have permanent damage from deep discharge. See battery replacement.
Cause #2: Charger Issue (Easy Fix)
Symptoms
- Charger LED doesn’t show
- MacBook acts dead but charger may be the actual problem
What’s Happening
USB-C cables fail surprisingly often. Power adapters (especially cheap third-party ones) can fail. Sometimes the wall outlet itself.
Fix
- Try a known-working USB-C cable
- Try a different USB-C charger if available
- Try a different wall outlet
- If MagSafe (older MacBooks): check for green/orange light on connector
When to See a Repair Shop
If different cable + different adapter still doesn’t power MacBook → likely MacBook charging port or charging IC issue. See charging port repair.
Cause #3: SMC State Corruption (Easy Fix)
Symptoms
- Was working fine, then suddenly won’t power on
- Random shutdowns recently
- Charging behavior weird
What’s Happening
The SMC (System Management Controller) handles power, sleep, fans. Sometimes it gets into a bad state and the system won’t boot.
Fix
For Apple Silicon Macs (M1/M2/M3): Just restart your MacBook. SMC equivalent reset happens automatically.
For Intel Macs WITHOUT removable battery (most 2009+): 1. Plug in charger 2. Press and hold: Shift + Control + Option + Power button — all four together — for 10 seconds 3. Release all keys 4. Press Power button to turn on
For Intel Macs WITH removable battery (2008 and older): 1. Shut down 2. Disconnect charger 3. Remove battery 4. Hold Power button for 5 seconds 5. Replace battery 6. Connect charger 7. Press Power button
When to See a Repair Shop
SMC reset doesn’t fix it → deeper hardware issue likely.
Cause #4: NVRAM Corruption (Sometimes Easy Fix)
Symptoms
- MacBook seems on (fan running) but no display
- Display shows but immediately shuts down
- Strange boot behavior
What’s Happening
NVRAM stores small settings (display resolution, startup disk, sound). Corruption can prevent boot.
Fix
For Intel Macs only: 1. Shut down 2. Press Power button 3. Immediately hold: Option + Command + P + R 4. Hold for ~20 seconds (you’ll hear startup chime twice) 5. Release
Apple Silicon Macs reset NVRAM automatically on each boot — no manual procedure exists.
When to See a Repair Shop
If NVRAM reset doesn’t work and you’re on Intel Mac → hardware issue likely.
Cause #5: Display Issue Hiding Active MacBook
Symptoms
- Press power, hear fan running but no image
- Sometimes hear startup chime but no display
What’s Happening
MacBook is actually ON — the display is just dead. Common causes: – Backlight failure (image visible only with flashlight) – Display cable disconnected – LCD panel damaged – GPU chip failure (older Intel MacBooks)
Fix to Try
- Shine a bright flashlight at an angle on the screen
- Look for very faint image
- If you see it = backlight is broken (not display)
When to See a Repair Shop
- See faint image: backlight driver IC failure (chip-level repair, ₹5-10K) or LCD assembly replacement
- See nothing: GPU or display cable issue
- See screen replacement or chip-level repair
Cause #6: Charging IC Failure (Repair Shop Job)
Symptoms
- Won’t power on even with new charger and SMC reset
- Charger LED doesn’t show
- MacBook completely unresponsive to power button
- May have happened gradually (intermittent then stopped)
What’s Happening
The chip on the logic board that manages charging has failed. Battery can’t be recharged, so when battery drains, MacBook won’t power on.
Fix
Not DIY-able. Requires chip-level repair on logic board (₹6,000-12,000 in Pune).
See chip-level repair or logic board repair.
Cause #7: Logic Board Component Failure (Repair Shop Job)
Symptoms
- Won’t power on at all
- Suddenly stopped working (no warning)
- Sometimes happens after liquid damage (even days/weeks later)
- Sometimes happens after physical impact
What’s Happening
Component on the logic board failed. Could be PMIC (power management), SMC chip, voltage regulators, or capacitors. Apple’s typical response is “replace the logic board.”
Fix
Component-level repair at chip-level shop. Cost: ₹6-25K depending on which component failed. Apple’s quote is typically ₹50-70K for full board replacement of the same issue.
See logic board repair.
When to Try DIY vs When to Stop
Try DIY first: – Charger swap – Power button hold (10 sec) – SMC reset – NVRAM reset (Intel only) – Flashlight test for backlight
Stop and call a repair shop if: – Above doesn’t work after 30 minutes – You smell anything burning – You see liquid damage signs – MacBook was dropped recently – You’re not comfortable with the procedures above
Don’t try: – Opening the MacBook yourself – Disconnecting battery yourself (high risk of damage) – Putting it in rice (myth that doesn’t work)
