What Causes Trackpad Failures?

Swollen battery (most common): the trackpad sits directly above the battery. When batteries swell, they push the trackpad upward — making clicks impossible and damaging trackpad mechanisms. Fix: battery replacement + often trackpad replacement if damaged.

Liquid damage: spills affect the trackpad ribbon cable connector or PCB. Fix: cleanup + often trackpad replacement if PCB corroded.

Worn click mechanism: older MacBooks (pre-Force Touch) had physical click mechanisms that wore out. Fix: trackpad assembly replacement.

Cable damage: trackpad ribbon cable can fray, tear, or disconnect — especially after improper repair attempts. Fix: cable replacement (sometimes) or full trackpad assembly.

Logic board trackpad controller (rare): the controller IC on the logic board can fail. Fix: chip-level repair.

⚠️ If your trackpad is bulging upward, your battery is swelling underneath. Stop using immediately and bring in for inspection. Swollen batteries are a fire risk.

Trackpad FAQ

Why is my trackpad bulging upward?
Almost always a swollen battery underneath. This is a safety issue — stop using and bring in immediately. Swollen batteries can ignite. Trackpad usually needs replacement after this damage.
Can you replace just the trackpad on a 2020+ MacBook?
On most 2020+ MacBooks, trackpad is integrated into the top-case (with battery and keyboard). Standalone trackpad replacement isn’t supported by Apple’s design. We replace the full top-case.
Will my Force Touch / haptic feedback work the same after replacement?
Yes — same hardware, same calibration. Force Touch is part of the trackpad assembly, replaced together.
My click works but multi-touch doesn’t — software or hardware?
Could be either. We test in safe mode (rules out software conflicts) and with diagnostic tools. ~70% of these cases are hardware (trackpad PCB), ~30% software/SMC reset fixes it.
How long does trackpad replacement take?
2-4 hours for standalone trackpad. 4-6 hours for top-case (includes keyboard + battery replacement).
