Service · Chip-Level / L4 Repair

Pune’s Only Dedicated Chip-Level MacBook Repair Lab.

Chip-level / component-level / L4 repair — the actual surgical work of fixing failed ICs, capacitors, and traces on MacBook logic boards. The kind of work Apple replaces entire ₹70,000 boards to avoid doing.

Repair Levels Explained — Why Chip-Level Matters

The repair industry has informal ‘levels’ describing repair depth: L1 — Software (anyone). L2 — Module Swap (replace battery, RAM, screen — what most shops do). L3 — Sub-assembly (replace logic board — what Apple does). L4 — Component-Level (replace individual ICs, capacitors, resistors — specialist labs only). L5 — Engineering (manufacturers only).

Apple typically operates at L2-L3. They swap modules and entire boards. They don’t do L4 because it’s not economical for their service model.

Most ‘MacBook repair’ shops in Pune operate at L2. Battery swap, screen swap, keyboard swap. Anything L3+ they outsource or refuse.

MacLab operates at L4 in-house. That’s our entire specialty.

Chip-Level Repairs We Do Routinely

Power Issues

  • Power Management IC (PMIC) failure
  • Charging IC failure (USB-C / MagSafe)
  • Voltage regulator (VRM) failures around CPU
  • SMC (System Management Controller) issues

Display Issues

  • Backlight driver IC
  • LCD connector reseating
  • Display data path repair (after liquid damage)

Connectivity

  • WiFi / Bluetooth module IC
  • USB controller chips (per-port)
  • Thunderbolt/USB-C multiplexer ICs
  • Audio codec IC

Storage / SSD

  • T2 chip recovery (2018-2020 Intel)
  • M-series SSD recovery (limited but possible)
  • NAND flash chip work
  • SSD controller issues

Trace Repair

  • PCB track restoration after corrosion
  • Via repair (between PCB layers)
  • Pad lifting after improper repair attempts

BGA Work

  • GPU chip reballing (older Intel MBPs)
  • T2 chip work
  • SOC (M-series) component repair (where feasible)

Equipment Required for Chip-Level Work

1

Microscope + Soldering

Stereo microscope (7x-45x), LED ring illumination, anti-vibration platform. Many components are <1mm — invisible to the naked eye.

2

Hot-Air Rework

Digital temperature control (250°C-450°C precision), variable airflow, ESD-safe nozzles. For removing/installing surface-mount components.

3

Multimeter + Oscilloscope

Bench-grade multimeter (Fluke / Hantek), 100MHz oscilloscope minimum. For voltage measurements, signal analysis, fault tracing.

4

IR Preheater + Ultrasonic + Thermal Camera

IR preheater for BGA work, ultrasonic + 99.9% IPA for cleanup, thermal imaging for shorted ICs. ESD protection throughout.

Why Pune Chooses MacLab for Chip-Level

Specialization

We don’t do iPhone repair, sell devices, or do PC repair. MacBook chip-level work is our entire focus. Specialization beats generalization for skill-intensive work.

Lab-grade setup

Our CityMall workshop has the equipment listed above — actually used, not for show. You’re welcome to visit and see.

Process transparency

Daily WhatsApp updates with photos. Detailed quote BEFORE any work begins. No work without your written approval. Failed components shown to you on return.

Apple-Authorized Service alternative

For out-of-warranty repairs, we offer the same level of work as Apple’s depot facilities — at 60-80% lower cost — with personal service and faster turnaround.

Chip-Level Repair FAQ

Can you really do this work in-house, or do you outsource?
100% in-house at our CityMall lab. We do not outsource any chip-level work. The engineer working on your device is the same one who quoted it.
How long does chip-level repair take?
Single component replacement: 24-48 hours. BGA work (GPU, T2): 48-96 hours. Complex multi-component repairs (liquid damage): 72-120 hours. Quote includes specific ETA.
What if you damage my MacBook during repair?
Repair-shop liability insurance covers devices in our care. If we damage your MacBook in our possession, we replace or repair at our cost. To date, we maintain a clean record — but the policy exists for protection on both sides.
Are your replacement components original Apple parts?
Where possible, yes — pulled from donor logic boards or sourced from authorized distributors. Generic parts only where Apple-specific parts are unobtainable, and we disclose this in the quote.
Will the repair ‘show’ as non-OEM in System Information?
Apple has added serial-number checks to many parts in 2018+ MacBooks (display, battery, fingerprint sensor). Replacement may show as ‘non-genuine’ warning even with OEM parts. We disclose this risk before any 2018+ work. Functionality is unaffected; only the warning shows.
