What a Free MacBook Diagnosis Actually Checks (12-Point List)

“Free diagnosis” sounds like a line. Here’s exactly what we do during one, so you know what you’re getting before you book it.

Doorstep or lab, it’s the same 12 checks. Takes about 30 minutes. You get a straight answer, not a guess.

1. Power and charging

Does it charge at all? Charging light behaviour, wattage draw on a known-good charger, and whether the issue is the cable, the port, or something on the board.

2. Battery health

Cycle count, current capacity vs designed capacity, and whether there’s any physical swelling under the trackpad — that one’s urgent if present.

3. Boot behaviour

Does it boot normally, boot into recovery, or not boot at all? Chime or no chime, black screen vs no backlight — these point to different failures (software vs display vs board).

4. Screen and display

Backlight, flickering, dead pixels, lines, discolouration, and hinge/cable stress marks that predict future screen failures.

5. Keyboard and trackpad

Every key tested individually (not just “does it type”), trackpad click and multi-touch gestures, and a check for debris or liquid residue under the keys.

6. Speakers and microphone

Audio output on both channels, distortion at volume, and mic input test — speaker blow-outs are common and often missed until a call sounds bad.

7. Ports

USB-C/Thunderbolt ports individually tested for both data and charging (they can fail independently of each other), plus SD card slot and headphone jack where applicable.

8. Liquid damage signs

Corrosion indicator stickers, visible residue, and — if you tell us there was a spill — how far it likely travelled based on where the machine was sitting.

9. Thermal and fan behaviour

Fan ramp-up under load, unusual noise (grinding, ticking), and thermal paste condition if we can tell from behaviour alone at this stage.

10. Storage (SSD) health

Read/write speed sanity check and SMART data where accessible — a failing SSD often looks like “the whole laptop is slow” to the user.

11. Logic board visual inspection

A look at the board itself where possible without full disassembly — corrosion, burn marks, bulging capacitors, anything visibly wrong.

12. Software sanity check

Ruling out the boring explanation. Startup items, disk space, macOS version, and obvious software causes — so we don’t quote you hardware work for a software problem.

What happens after

We tell you what’s actually wrong, in plain language, and quote it. If it’s not worth fixing — cost higher than the machine’s worth, or damage beyond repair — we’ll say that too. No charge either way.
